DoD is how empty you are allowed to run the tank.
Depth of discharge is the fraction of nameplate energy you actually use. LFP is happy near 90%. Flooded tubular wants ~50% if you want more than two summers.

What it is
Usable kWh = nameplate × DoD × round-trip. A 5.12 kWh LFP at 90% and ~95% RTE is about 4.4 kWh at the AC bus after inverter loss. Four 12 V 200 Ah tubulars at 48 V are 9.6 kWh nameplate and ~4.8 kWh usable at 50% DoD.

Shops still sell “4 batteries for AC all night.” They are counting nameplate Ah and ignoring DoD, Peukert, and the 50% rule. That is how a “night AC kit” dies in August.

DoD on the inverter LCD
Closed-loop CAN shows SoC from the BMS. Open-loop voltage guessing will lie at the knees of the LFP curve. If the shop left protocol on USE, you do not have DoD protection — you have a voltage number and a hope.
Worked example — Quetta
Take a 6 kW-class hybrid in Quetta (QESCO, ~5.8 PSH). 10 × 645 W is 6.45 kW DC. Derated yield ≈ 6.45 × 5.8 × 0.78 ≈ 29.2 kWh on a clean day — then high PSH and cold January Voc. This page (DoD (depth of discharge)) is the piece of that plant people skip on WhatsApp. If your quote cannot survive this Quetta sentence, it will not survive May. Can I drain LFP to empty?
The BMS will cut. Doing it every night still ages the pack. Design to 90%.
Why does tubular need 50%?
Lead-acid sulphates when parked empty. Daily 80% DoD is how UPS banks die.
Does DoD change backup hours?
Linearly. Half DoD is half hours. That is the whole night-AC conversation.
